In retrospect, maybe watching four hours of Thai horror movies about witchcraft and then following it up with finishing Wyrd Sisters right before going to bed was not such a hot idea. Granny Weatherwax + Art of the Devil = NOES.
Also: changed my LJ layout to something with more robots. ROBOTS!
While I haven't read 488 yet (thank you, OPHQ, and your persistent failure to notice you've got an empty zip file where 488 should be), I've been following recent chapters with a lot of interest thanks to several things.
For one, BROOKE. Christ on a cracker. The sad part is that, out of all the main characters (Strawhats and honorary Strawhats like Vivi), Brooke actually comes the closest from what I've seen to having a "happy" past--he made it to adulthood before horrible things started happening to him. But holy crap, I can't imagine being stuck on a ship in the middle of a sea of endless fog surrounded by the bones of your beloved crewmates and memories of what you once had for fifty freaking years. It's a wonder he's not insane. Maybe being dead himself gives him some extra perspective, I don't know. But the Rumba Pirates make my heart sad and happy at the same time, and I kind of hope Brooke decides to join the crew just so he'll have nakama to love again. Then again, his earlier loss may make him wary of joining another pirate crew--he may decide to set out to go see Laboon by himself. I can't see Luffy letting himescape take his leave that easily, though.
For two, ZORO. Why you gotta be so hot all the time, marimohead? But srsly, this arc has highlighted a part of Zoro we've only seen the edges of beforehand, in places like Whiskey Peak and when he's with Johnny and Yosaku: Zoro the Protector. Usually, Zoro lets people fight their own fights. But with Luffy incapacitated and Bartholomew Kuma being all like "I'M IN UR FIGHT, THREATENIN UR CAPTIN," and Zoro being all "NO WAI!" and self-sacrificing, it kind of makes you think a little bit. His speech about "If I can't protect my captain, what good am I?" kind of hammered it home that Zoro'smadly in love with Luffy priorities have changed since he first stepped onto Luffy's dinghy way back in Volume 1.
Luffy got his little "It's not enough that I be strong enough to be the Pirate King, I must be strong enough to let all of my nakama realize their dreams as well" moment back in Enies Lobby, and now it's Zoro's turn. It's not enough that he be strong enough to beat Mihawk, now he's got to be strong enough to be partner and protector to the Pirate King. Strong enough to watch Sanji's back when he needs it and let him fight his own damn way out when he doesn't. Strong enough to cover the strategic advance to the rear of a brave warrior of the sea, strong enough to keep the hands of the woman who will map the whole world safeand to live long enough to eventually pay that debt. Strong enough to never surpass the abilities of the greatest doctor in the world NO DYING, ZORO, NOT EVEN CHOPPER CAN FIX THAT. Strong enough to keep Franky's dream ship in one piece, strong enough to make Robin believe that she doesn't need to worry about losing her nakama ever again. And THEN he has to beat Mihawk while his crewmates look on and cheer, because you know that's how it's going down.
Oh Zoro, you great daft noble bastard, I love you. ♥
For three, asjakjd SHICHIBUKKAKED. Kuma provided an excellent indication of the power level the Strawhats are going up against in the New World. It's terrifying. Devil Fruit + cyborgy bits = CHECK PLZ.And I kind of want to know where he put Perona. Bitch better get her own cover arc. Plus Blackbeard is the newest Shichibukai, which means we've officially got a D. on every side of this fight: Dragon for the rebels, Garp for the Marines, Blackbeard for the Shichibukai, and Luffy for the pirates and Ace for the prison riot OH GOD ;_;. The Will of D is strong, but at this point I think they're going to start cancelling each other out. All we need now is for Luffy's cousin Monkey D. Jim-Bob to be one of the Four Emperors and the entire planet is officially boned.

I hate finding out what happened to Brooke. ;__; It's awful, why are all their lives so sad!
Buuuuuuuut, I didn't realise about all the D.s being on different sides. This is going to be good,
prison riot, ftw. ;__;Oh, One Piece. *___*

Date: 2008-02-20 06:59 pm (UTC)The recent cover pages had me feeling sort of sorry for Iceberg and Paulie (being chased after FTW!)
And I so agree with the prison riot.

Ace: "Whut? You?"
Bon-chan: "Stop joking arooooooound~! I helped him escape from Alabasta, got arrested, escaped, and then went back to rescue my friends, and that why I'm here and wearing all this taaaaacky seastone jewelry."
Ace: "OMGWTFtemporarilynoBBQ. You're totally coming with me when I bust out of here."

Date: 2008-02-20 07:35 pm (UTC)At first I 'hated' Brooke, (Pervert character: DO NOT WANT) but he has *completely* won me over. Him and Laboon are total BFF (and the pervert stuff has so far been kept to a tasteful level.) Also, his character design is based on 'Baron Samedi', the voodoo spirit/saint of the dead. AWESOME.
Zoro is, as usual, the very definition of awesomeness itself. *hugs him*

And yeah, this arc has been good to Zoro--it's been a really long time since Oda actually did something new with his character, aside from his normal routine (which I love, no criticizing there!)

Date: 2008-02-21 10:04 am (UTC)Ahem, anyway, this post made me sporfle and want even MOAR to catch up but I MUST somehow resist until I can find time to get the last two Enies Lobby thingies out of the brain and then...oh and then...
XD ZORO!

pretty f-ing gay all around too(no subject)
Date: 2008-02-21 08:18 pm (UTC)SRSLY. Sometimes I suspect that what Nami is growing are not mikan trees but faggo-trees, and she feeds the boys the fruit in bulk.(no subject)
Date: 2008-02-21 08:30 pm (UTC)This is the first time that I've really started to think that Sanji and Zoro could become real friends and not only nakama. (up til now it's felt mostly like 'He's like family. I -love- him, but I can't stand him') Possible friendship makes me happy. :)
Well, it's gonna backfire on her cuz Sanji totally blew her off in that chapter to go check on Zoro's almost-dead ass.(no subject)
Date: 2008-02-21 09:49 pm (UTC)Spartacustotally the man you want to see about killing."It's fascinating--Sanji's self-preservation instincts are nearly as powerful as Usopp's, though they're pointed in a different direction. I tend to think he views his life and body as a testament to Zeff's sacrifice, and so he's obligated to try to preserve them. In the beginning of the series, he didn't understand why Zoro didn't think the same way. He understands now, and somewhere in his secret heart of hearts he admits that he was wrong and Zoro was right. This was his big stupid macho way of
hitting on himsaying so. ♥It's the blood. Zoro's blood is a powerful aphrodesiac, and he was surrounded by a twenty-foot circle of it. It's a miracle Sanji didn't come in his pants right there.(no subject)
Date: 2008-02-21 10:14 pm (UTC)Then again, it's worth pointing out that Zoro has never really (up until maybe these chapters) been as close to death as baby Sanji was on that rock, and maybe sees his body as merely a tool for achieving his goals. ... I'm not sure exactly what I'm trying to say other than that I think it was more shocking (for the audience) to see -Sanji- offer up his life than it was to see Zoro do it.
*snort* I'm seriously trying to remember if Sanji has ever really touched Zoro outside of a fight or a splash page before that chapter (maybe a drunken celebration?).
Who's to say he didn't? *waggles brows*
